(Iowa) -- A national study ranks Iowa high on the list of the nation's safest states during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new study from WalletHub.com ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Iowa ranks as the 15th safest state in the country, with the 2nd lowest COVID-19 transmission rate.

Jill Gonzalez with WalletHub says the study is based on five factors:

  • Vaccination rate
  • Positive test cases
  • Hospitalizations
  • Death rate
  • Overall transmission rate

Gonzalez says Iowa does have room to improve when it comes to increasing its vaccination rate.

Overall, Vermont ranked #1 on the list, with Louisiana coming in last at #51.
