(Des Moines, IA) -- One refugee family from Afghanistan has already settled in Des Moines and dozens more are expected to settle in central Iowa. Governor Kim Reynolds says Iowa is prepared to accept refugees. She spoke to reporters at the Iowa State Fair Wednesday where she said she's working with the U.S. State Department to get the process started. 40 refugee families are expected to move to central Iowa by next year.

More than 8,000 people have been evacuated since Sunday, when the Taliban took control of Kabul. The Biden Administration says at least 10,000 Americans and even more allies still need to leave.
