Mollie Tibbetts' killer gets life sentence

POWESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa -- The man convicted of killing Mollie Tibbetts is spending the rest of his life in prison.

Cristhian Bahena Rivera was given a mandatory life sentence on the 1st Degree Murder conviction Monday afternoon.

Rivera was convicted in May of stabbing Tibbetts to death in 2018.

Earlier this summer, Rivera asked for a new trial after claiming other men killed the University of Iowa student and framed him for the crime.

That request was denied by the court.
