(Omaha, NE) -- The first phase of the trail connecting downtown Omaha to downtown Council Bluffs is nearing completion.

The FIRST AVE trail is a 14-foot-wide pedestrian and bike trail is expected to finish at the end of 2022.

The trail will run from 35th to 16th streets, offering a new way to cross town for the thousands of residents living near it.

“About 30% of Council Bluffs’ population live within a half-mile of the FIRST AVE trail, so we’re hoping they’ll take advantage of commuting to work or to school or the grocery store, or even a coffee shop for a cup of coffee,” says Ashley Kruse, the Council Bluffs Communications Director.

Kruse tells 6 News the trail will also include plazas and open green spaces, acting more as a linear park than a trail.

Part two of the project is expected to begin this spring.
