(Des Moines, IA) -- The number of Monkeypox cases continues to slowly grow in Iowa. The Centers for Disease Control says seven cases are now confirmed in the state.

The latest case was detected in Des Moines.

The Polk County Health Department says Monkeypox can spread through bodily fluids, saliva and respiratory secretion through the eyes, nose, and mouth, contaminated objects or shared personal items such as bedding or towels, and pregnant women can spread the Monkeypox virus to their fetus through their placenta.

To reduce your chance of getting Monkeypox, make sure you're washing your hands frequently.

Infectious disease experts say the threat is still very low here in Iowa.

This past weekend, the World Health Organization declared Monkeypox a public health emergency.
