Public Hearing Set For Proposal To Test Poultry For Salmonella

(Des Moines, IA) -- A new proposal is targeting national salmonella outbreaks.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a proposal that would require chickens and turkeys to be tested for the illness before being slaughtered and sold to consumers.

The proposal comes as salmonella cases are on the rise.

Nearly 670 cases were reported in Iowa last year, according to the state's public health department.

The USDA will hold a public hearing on the poultry testing proposal November 3.
