Law Enforcement Urges Halloween Driving Vigilance

The Nebraska State Patrol will be among the agencies working overtime on this Halloween night, which includes monitoring for impaired driving.

“Halloween means extra foot traffic in communities across our state as kids set out to trick-or-treat,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol in a news release. “It is imperative that drivers stay alert for kids in residential areas and keep their focus on the road. If your Halloween celebration involved alcohol, plan to have a sober driver for the trip home.”

The Patrol says their troopers across Nebraska will be performing high visibility patrols in an effort to reduce the likelihood of severe injury or fatal crashes.

The efforts are made possible thanks in part to a grant of $7,375 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

Nebraska State Patrol safety tips for drivers:

- Be alert for trick-or-treaters by scanning the road, especially where sight distance is limited.

- Slower speeds save lives.

- Put your phone down and keep your attention on the road.

- If you see an impaired driver, call *55 to make a report to the NSP Highway Helpline.

Safety tips for pedestrians:

- Be visible; Even if your costume is dark, it’s a good idea to have a light with you.

- Walk on the sidewalk and use crosswalks or intersections to cross the street.

- Double check for cars before crossing the street. Just because you see the car, doesn’t mean the driver can see you.

- Use the buddy system to help keep each other safe.
