DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa's voter turnout for this year's midterm election comes close to a record.

Secretary of State Paul Pate says 1,220,000 Iowans cast ballots in Tuesday's election--the second-highest ever for midterm election.

2018's midterm election is still tops at 1,329,93 votes cast in Iowa.

"My thanks to Iowans from every corner of the state who made their voices heard by voting,” Pate said. “I also want to thank the poll workers and county election officials across Iowa for their hard work and dedication. However, our work is not finished.”

Pate says every county is doing post-election audits in randomly selected precincts to help ensure the integrity of the vote.

He says the governor's race and constitutional amendment ballot measure will also be audited.
