(Lincoln, NE) -- The captain of the Husker defense will not be returning to Lincoln in 2023, as he declares for the NFL Draft.

On Tuesday, Garrett Nelson announced on his Twitter that he will declare for next year's pro draft. In making the announcement, the Scottsbluff native spoke of his childhood dreams of playing for the University of Nebraska and that, "Representing this University, the people of this state, and my family was one of the highest honors I will have in my life."

Nelson served as Team Captain in 2022, was named to the Second-Team All-Big Ten this past season and was on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. He started every game in 2022, which extended his streak to 32 consecutive starts following the season. He led Nebraska with 9 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks while recording a career-high 65 total tackles. He also added two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. At the end of the regular season, Nelson ranked 22nd nationally in fumble recoveries.
