Former Waterloo Firefighter Sentenced to Prison on Sexual Assault Charge

(Douglas County, NE) -- A former Waterloo firefighter is sentenced to prison for attempted sexual assault.

On Monday, a Douglas County judge sentenced 28 year old Brandon Hanusek to three years in prison for the February 2021 assault of woman who he had been out drinking with. The victim told police that she believed Hanusek had drugged and sexually assaulted her after going to two bars with him. The victim said after having just a few drinks, she started to black out and then woke up on Hanusek's bathroom floor. Investigators say the victim reported being in immense physical pain in her pelvic region and being covered in bruises. A rape kit was conducted, with Hanusek's DNA being found during testing.

Hanusek agreed to a plea deal last year, which dropped the charge of first-degree sexual assault of a person who was physically or mentally incapable of consenting. Hanusek will serve at least a year-and-a-half and will have to register as a sex offender.
