(Iowa City, IA) -- An eastern Iowa family is raising awareness for a rare form of pediatric cancer.

The TaterTough foundation is named after Tate Schaefer. At 11 years of age in 2018, Tate was told he had diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas, or DIPG.

Doctors told Tate the life expectancy for someone with DIPG is typically nine to 12 months. After a long fight, Tate died on March 29, 2021.

Darcey and Brad Schaefer, Tate's parents, are now helping fight pediatric cancer, raising money to help others learn more about DIPG and other pediatric cancers.
