City Of Johnston Gets $3K Tree Grant

(Johnston, IA) -- The City of Johnston gets $3,000 through MidAmerican Energy’s “Trees Please!” program.

The energy efficiency program pays for tree planting projects in community spaces.

According to the city's Parks and Recreation Director, the funding will also support planting trees along the Green Meadows Greenbelt Trail that was affected by the 2020 tornado and derecho.

Trees are vital because they help protect against storm water runoff, provide wind barriers, shade, and oxygen.

Tree planting is expected to begin in May or June.

Johnston is one of 55 cities in Iowa to get this grant.
