West Des Moines Fires Include One Where 10-Year-Old Became The Hero

(Des Moines, IA) -- We're learning much more about a series of house fires that damaged three homes in West Des Moines this week, including one fire on Tuesday where a 10-year-old girl became the hero.

Roselin Castro was home alone with her 7-year-old sister when she saw smoke and the outside of their house on fire. She used a cell phone to quickly call her mother who was on an errand, then ran inside and got her sister safely out of the house.

West Des Moines Fire Marshall Mike Whitsell says Castro had acted on what she learned when a firefighter came to her school to deliver fire safety tips for kids.

Whitsell says the fires should be a reminder for local families to remain vigilant about fire safety at their homes.

He says making a plan takes as little time as buying a lottery ticket and pays off -- even more.

A cause for the fire is still being determined.
