New Information On Southwest Iowa Human Remains

The Fremont County, Iowa Sheriff's Department says no foul play is suspected in the investigation of human remains found near the Missouri River, west of Interstate 29, near Hamburg.

Investigators say the remains are of 30-year old Salvador Agustin Fonseca of Springfield, Missouri.

Sheriff's Deputies were originally dispatched to the location in far southwest Iowa after a passerby found the remains in the remote area last month.

Among the items found at the scene were car keys belonging to a 2015 Chevrolet Spark.

Investigators say on March 6th, 2022, during a theft investigation, a 2015 Chevy Spark was recovered from I-29 northbound that came back to an individual out of Springfield, Missouri.

Deputies say they tried to locate the owner of the vehicle, but he had left his last known address without an indication of where he was going.

The last known sighting of Fonseca was February 28th, 2022, in Springfield, Mo.

The Sheriff's office says in a news release it is unknown why Fonseca had stopped on that section of interstate, but it appears that he walked west to the Missouri River.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Fremont County Coroner’s Office, and Iowa State Medical Examiners.
