West Des Moines To Vote On Proposed $271 Million Budget

(West Des Moines, IA) -- The City of West Des Moines will hold a public hearing tonight (Monday) on budget matters. Council members will vote on a proposed $271 (M) million budget after the public hearing. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.

The proposed budget will reduce the City’s property tax levy rate from $10.95 to $10.90 per $1,000 of taxable property valuation.

 The City’s FY 2023-24 budget is comprised of basic operating expenditures totaling approximately $96.5 million, business/proprietary expenses of $76.8 million, debt service expenditures of $45.1 million, and capital improvement expenditures of $52.6 million.

West Des Moines has some big road projects planned, including work on S. Grand Prairie Parkway, 8th Street, Grand Avenue, and Mills Civic Parkway.

The FY 2023-24 Capital Improvement Plan includes the following:

 

  • S. Grand Prairie Parkway – Construct Grand Ave to Raccoon River Drive
  • 8th Street – Reconstruct from I-235 to Clegg Road
  • Grand Avenue – Widen from I-35 to Jordan Creek Parkway
  • Mills Civic Parkway – Reconstruct Bridge over Sugar Creek

West Des Moines will get approximately $9.1 million in Road Use Tax funding during FY 2023-24 which will be used for street-related capital improvement projects, street lighting costs, pavement maintenance, and other related obligations.
