(Rock Island, IL) -- The City of Rock Island is revitalizing its downtown area with a $7.3 million plan.

City council approved design and engineering plans to renovate places on 18th Street, and 1st to 3rd Avenue near the riverfront.

City officials say the main focus is the pedestrian mall on 2nd Avenue that has vacant stores.

They also say the hope is to bring more businesses and entertainment into the community.

The funding comes from local, state, and federal money.

Crews expect to complete designs by the end of 2023 and begin construction by February or March 2024.
