(Omaha, NE) -- The city of Omaha would take on 3,500 tons of yard waste from the city of Bellevue under a proposal up for city council consideration Tuesday.

"This is viewed as a mutually beneficial agreement," said Jim Tyler with Omaha Public Works. "[It] could lead to a future long-term agreement, if chosen by both parties."

Andy Harpenau with Gretna Sanitation and Soil Dynamics said Omaha would be "directly competing" with their private business.

"We're efficient. We've done a good job for the city of Bellevue," said Harpenau. "Quite frankly, it just doesn't make sense that the city of Omaha is trying to take over more of this composting material."

If approved, the cities would enter a one-year pilot program less than a year after Omaha agreed to accept waste from Council Bluffs.

"We do these agreements all the time," said Tyler. "It's good governance, working together as government entities, in the best interest of the taxpayers."
