(Iowa City, IA) -- The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of scammers posing as deputies.

The sheriff's office says they've been reviewing reports of suspicious phone calls over the last week.

The scammers call claiming to be sheriff's deputies and tell the resident they've missed a court date. The scammers then demand the residents seek out payment.

Police say residents who receive one of these calls should hang up.

They say scammers are using apps to spoof any phone number and most of the time the sheriff's office will talk to you in person.
