Quad Cities Gets Illinois Port Designation

(Rock Island, IL) -- Rock island is now the 20th port district in Illinois, allowing federal grants to improve water transportation on local waterways.

The Senate Bill 1897 signed by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and was co-written by the Rock Island mayor and the executive director for the Bi-State Regional Commission.

The bill passed on May 9 and will become effective on January 1, 2024.

Rock Island was the only inland water in Illinois with an interstate crossing but was not a state recognized port.
