Polk County Fair Gets Underway in Des Moines

(Des Moines, IA) -- The Polk County Fair kicked off Saturday at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. Marci Vinsand, Iowa State Extension Polk County 4H Youth Coordinator, says not a lot of people know about it since the event is just a few weeks before the Iowa State Fair.

"The Polk County Fair gives our youth (4H and FFA) here in Polk County an opportunity to showcase their learning," Vinsand said. She says the number of livestock entries is up this year. "We can rival a lot of the other counties with our numbers of livestock," Vinsand said Sunday, "whether it be cattle, sheep, goats, dairy goats."

She estimates 100 dairy goats are present this year. Vinsand also says they have also seen big increases in sheep and turkey entries in 2023.

On Sunday, a free barbecue lunch was given for attendees at the 4H building along with a ceremony to coronate a new Polk County Fair Queen. The Polk County Fair lasts through the week and ends with a livestock auction on Friday. More about the Polk County Fair, including a schedule of events, can be found at their website.
