(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines is about to be invaded by tens of thousands of bicyclists on RAGBRAI. Local police say drivers in certain parts of Des Moines can expect delays as the bikers arrive Wednesday, July 26th. Des Moines Police are planning to have officers directing traffic at key locations, such as along East 14th Street and University. The route travels from the Iowa Capitol through downtown Des Moines on Walnut Street.

Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parezik tells WHO Radio the bulk of the bikers are expected between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Parezik says officers will be at several downtown intersections between 2nd and 15th Streets, to help north and south motor vehicle traffic cross Walnut Street, during gaps in the bike traffic. He says drivers, however, can expect some delays if there are large clusters of bikers. The route goes from downtown south on Fleur to Waterworks Park for the evening.

Thursday, July 17th may be more challenging for downtown traffic, as the bikers continue their trip eastward. They travel north on Fleur Drive to Walnut Street east to the Iowa State Fairgrounds area, and eventually to Pleasant Hill. Police say Thursday morning may be more problematic for drivers downtown due to the timing of the departing bikers and normal morning traffic.

Police have published a number of maps of specific areas and neighborhoods.

The City of Des Moines has also positioned it's skyline cam on the Walnut Street Bridge.

Des Moines area hospitals and clinics are also reminding patients to plan ahead if they need to go to a medical facility that is along the RAGBRAI Route. Area hospitals and urgent care facilities are also adding staff in the event some of the thousands of bike riders need care due to the excessive heat.
