Des Moines Resident Escapes Overnight House Fire

(Des Moines, IA) -- Local authorities say a Des Moines resident is safe after flames damaged a home off Northeast 14th Street and 60th Avenue Monday night.

The occupant of the home was reportedly woken up from the smoke detectors, got out and called 911 from a neighbor's home.

Initial details indicate the fire may have started in an upstairs bedroom and at one point, firearms ammunition may have been popping off as well.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office and fire crews from Saylor, Johnston and Grimes responded to the scene where they discovered heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor.

Investigators do not believe any suspicious activity was involved.

No other details have been released.
