(Iowa City, IA) -- Johnson County needs a new jail. Sheriff Brad Kunkel speaking to Iowa News Now says the building has become a money pit that can no longer serve the county safely or effectively. He says the existing jail is a money pit with a leaky roof, sagging floors, and deteriorating walls. Kunkel also says space is maxed out. The Johnson County Board of Supervisors would have to approve a new facility. Board member Jon Green says even if the Board approved a new building, it would be at least five years down the road.
