Marion PD: Park Shooter's Mother Now Facing Weapons Charges

(Marion, IA) -- A Cedar Rapids woman is facing several charges in connection with a shooting August 5th in Marion. Police say 45-year-old Mirah Juarez-Hernandez is charged with:

Prohibited Transfer/Loan/Rent of Firearm to Unauthorized Person

Accessory After the Fact

Obstruction Prosecution or Defense

Transfer of Pistol of Revolver To Person Under 21-1st Offense

Investigators say she admitted to Marion officers she drove her son and his friends back to Cedar Rapids immediately after the shooting in the 1300 block of 7th Avenue. She also admitted she gave the gun used in the shooting to another juvenile to hide. The gun was later recovered from the juvenile's home.

The 17-year-old victim was shot in both legs and was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported the victim and two friends were playing basketball at Hannah Park with four other individuals. A fight broke out between the groups and a subject pulled a gun from his backpack and fired approximately 10 shots at the victim.

The shooter and the other individuals with him then ran away.

Marion Police 15-year-old Antonio Juarez-Luna of Cedar Rapids on August 26th, 2023. He's charged with Attempted Murder; Intimidation With a Dangerous Weapon; Going Armed With Intent; Use of Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime; Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon; and Minor Armed with Dangerous Weapon.
