(Mitchell County, IA) -- A northern Iowa man is dead after getting trapped in a grain bin. Crews were called to Iowa Highway 9 and Glass Avenue in Mitchell County farm yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. Sixty-nine-year-old Dennis Fischer died at the scene.

Assisting with the incident were the Osage Fire Department, Mitchell County EMS, Floyd County Search and Rescue and area citizens providing grain hauling and moving equipment.

Mitchell County Sheriff Gregory Beaver is reminding farmers to be mindful of the dangers of entering a grain bin, operating equipment after long hours of work and the motoring public who may be impatient on our roadways.

A Purdue University study finds in 2022, Iowa led the nation in fatal and non fatal grain entrapment cases (9). Minnesota had five that year. Indiana and Missouri had four cases.

The study found the majority of grain entrapment cases (64.3%) occurred in the Midwest (Corn Belt).
