Ionia Volunteer Firefighter Killed in Crash While Responding to Fire

(Ionia, IA) -- A volunteer firefighter is dead after a crash as firefighters were responding to a fire.

The Iowa State Patrol says a fire truck crashed into a UTV as both vehicles were trying to pass a tractor that was moving slowly. Investigators say the fire truck hit the back of the UTV and ejected the driver, Tony Hoffman. The Ionia Volunteer Fire Department says the driver of the UTV was Tony Hoffman, a 17 year veteran of the department. He was airlifted to the Mayo Clinic but later died of his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
