(Polk County, IA) -- A Polk County jury has convicted a Des Moines man of First Degree Murder. Forty-four-year-old Andrew Harris was charged in the deadly shooting of 39-year-old Tyrell Grimes the night of August 19th, 2022. Police were called to the 24-hundred block of University Avenue, outside Rico's at Drake bar and grill. Grimes was shot twice and died at the hospital. Harris first told police he wasn't there.

According to video evidence and witness testimony, Mr. Harris then returned to the area about eight minutes later to confront Mr. Grimes.  Harris later said the shooting was self-defense, because he believed Grimes posed a threat to him.

Harris is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 13. First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
