(Iowa City, IA) -- The University of Iowa wants more people to donate blood at the DeGowin Blood Center.

Blood and platelets donations are essential especially from people with blood type O.

According to the University of Iowa Health Care website, each pint of blood donated benefits two patients.

MBA and Donor Center Supervisor at the DeGowin Blood Center, Kerry DuBay, says donating blood during the winter season can make a big difference.

To donate, people must be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with a parent/guardian approval form.

The center is open Monday through Friday.

More details about donations can be found on the University of Iowa Health Care website.
