Fire Crews Investigating House Fire That Killed One Dog

(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Firefighters are investigating the cause of a house fire that killed one pet dog.

A news release from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department says crews responded to a home in the 200 block of 24th Street NE at around 9:30 a.m. after a caller reported a home was one fire.

Upon arrival crews discovered heavy smoke coming from the home and a fire in the basement.

The fire was extinguished quickly as it was mostly contained in the basement.

One woman and two children were able to escape the home without injury.

Two other dogs in the home were treated with on-scene using oxygen masks specifically made for pets.

Area Ambulance, the American Red Cross, Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control and Cedar Rapids Police Department all assisted in the response.
