Suspect Dead After Six Mile Chase, Shootout With Cops In Cedar Rapids

(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- A suspect who reportedly shot at officers during a six-mile police chase has died, after a shootout in Cedar Rapids. Police were called to a home in the 400 Block of Longwood Drive NE around 6:30 this (Monday) morning, after shots were fired from a car, at a home. Officers found the suspect vehicle about 10-minutes after the shots were reported.

The driver then led police on a chase and at one point, pointed a rifle outside the car and fired, near 1st Avenue near 12th Street E. Police say one point during the chase, a passenger in the car got out and was arrested. The driver shot toward officers a second time, on 34th Street SE, before driving off the road in the 5600 Block of Mount Vernon Road SE. Police say when the suspect shot his rifle a third time, five officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

No officers were injured.

The officers have been placed on leave pending the completion of the investigation.
