(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Schools in Cedar Rapids are closed today, and travel is not recommended as the first major winter storm of the season tracks across the state. The Corridor could see an additional 5-9 inches of snow by day's end. Several inches of snow will be blown around by increasingly strong winds.

The Iowa Department of Transportation's 5-1-1 website shows Iowa roads--nearly statewide--are completely covered by snow, with a tow ban in effect for the state from I-80 south.

A Snow Emergency is in effect for Cedar Rapids. Cars parked on Snow Routes will be ticketed or towed. Drivers are advised to obey the odd-even parking rule to give snowplows enough space to clear the streets.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is also asking residents who can to clear three feet of snow around fire hydrants to make it easier for firefighting crews to respond.

So far, just a few flights have been cancelled at both Eastern Iowa Airport.
