(Johnson County, IA) -- The Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Jail may shut down due to structural concerns.

Sheriff Brad Kunkel says cracks are visible on the interior and exterior of the building and that they also have a bucket in one hallway to catch water leaking from the roof.

In 2013, the county asked for a new building but was denied for not getting 60% of the threshold.

Problems will arise if the building closes down, such as locating a different area to house current and incoming inmates.

The cost of a new building has not been determined.

Sheriff Kunkel says they don't know when a closure would take place.

The building was built in 1980.
