Two dead in shooting in north of Des Moines

Police are investigating after a shooting just north of the Des Moines city limits leaves two people dead.

It happened just before 7 a.m., in the parking lot of a business in the 5100 block of NE 17th street. Not far from Interstate 35, and the Polk County Jail.

Investigators say this was an isolated incident, with the suspect the shooting the victim, then himself.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred at 5153 NE 17th Street, Des Moines. Polk County Sheriff’s Communications Center received a 911 call at 6:43 a.m. reporting the shooting. Deputies arrived on the scene within minutes and located two adult males with apparent gunshot wounds on the ground in the parking lot in front of the business.

Investigators arrived on the scene shortly after deputies and quickly began to identify witnesses and gather evidence. Preliminary investigations indicate this was an isolated incident between the two males. Witness statements, evidence located on the scene, and video evidence that has been obtained are leading investigators to believe the suspect in this incident shot the victim and then shot himself. Both the victim and the suspect died on the scene as a result of the shooting.

The names of the victim and the suspect are being withheld at this time, pending the notification of family members.

NE 17th Street was closed for a short time during this investigation but has since reopened. The investigation into this incident is ongoing and no other information is available at this time. Updates will be sent out as they become available for release.
