(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- The Iowa Department of Transportation plans to make changes to one of the deadliest stretches of road in Cedar Rapids. The S-curve on Interstate 380 downtown will soon receive a new high-friction road treatment to improve safety.

Cathy Cutler, a planner with the Iowa DOT tells Iowa's News Now that new pavement should help reduce the crashes. The new surface includes more piece of sharp rock that improves tire traction.

Cutler says there have been nearly 250 crashes on the I-380 S-curve in the past five years.
