(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Blank Park Zoo visitors can now see two cotton-top tamarin born last month. The tamarins were born February 22nd. Zookeepers say both parents, Kida and Eddie can be seen with the babies, who take turns riding on both parents back.

“The parents have done such a great job through this process, we will not step-in to do a neonate exam until a couple more weeks pass,” said Jay Tetzloff, chief animal officer. “This means we don’t yet know some of their specific characteristics, so we have yet to name the pair.”

Tamarins are native to Colombia.

Some other new animals that visitors to Blank Park Zoo will notice this spring break include two new six-year old male Japanese macaques name Ricky and Kai.

The Zoo has also added a pair of blue-crowned hanging parrots named Tiara and Beamie, are now at the Discovery Center. Hanging parrots receive their name because sometimes they will climb a tree unusually – almost upside down.
