(Des Moines, IA) -- A motorcyclist has died after a crash on Des Moines' south side. Police say the motorcyclist was speeding in the 1000 block of Army Post Road after 2 o'clock this (Monday) afternoon when he rear-ended an SUV, became airborne, and hit a utility pole. The motorcyclist, a 50-year-old Des Moines man, died at the hospital.

It is the city's second traffic-related fatality crash of 2024.

Police say there were no other injuries.

The preliminary investigation of this incident, including review of witness statements and examination of evidence at the scene, indicates that the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Army Post Road at a high-rate of speed. The SUV had completed a turn from northbound SW 11th Street to eastbound Army Post Road when the motorcycle crashed into the rear of the SUV. The motorcyclist was then ejected off the motorcycle.
