(Davenport, IA) -- A project to help downtown Davenport withstand Mississippi flooding is underway.

Clay Merritt with Davenport Public Works tells WQAD News 8 that despite Hesco barriers, water comes up through the storm sewer system and floods East River Drive any time the river reaches the 19-foot flood stage.

Upgrades to the storm sewer system now underway will allow River Drive to stay open during floods up to 22 feet.

The 3.8 million dollar project to upgrade the system is expected to be done in June.
