Iowa DOT: 2017 road fatalities hit 100

Iowa has just hit a deadly milestone, there have been 100-road fatalities so far this year.

Dennis Kleen of the Iowa Department of Transportation's Office of Driver Services says last year at this time, there were 120 fatalities.

There were 404 road fatalities in Iowa in 2016, the deadliest year in about a decade.   There were 80 more road fatalities in Iowa in 2016, than in 2015.

Kleen says there have been 12 motorcycle fatalities so far this year, slightly more compared to last year.   He says Iowa typically records the most fatal motorcycle crashes in July and August.

He cautions all drivers,  more inexperienced drivers are on the roads during the summer months.

Kleen says in any given year, alcohol related crashes account for up to 30-percent of road fatalities in Iowa.
