Iowa's first fireworks seller gets license, 46 more coming

There are more than 600 applicants who have started the licensing process to sell fireworks in Iowa. The first license was issued Wednesday, to a seller in Forest City, in far northern Iowa, but 46 more are close.

"That means their site plan, insurance documents, and their completed application."  Iowa State Fire Marshal Jeff Quigle tells WHO Radio News.

"Out of the 46, 15 are permanent structures, like a building, and the rest of temporary structures, like a tent or temporary building."

He says the site plan is important to protect neighbors.  "A bird's eye view of where they're going to be selling the fireworks, we look at distances from property lines, we look at exiting, and of course how the fireworks storage is going to be set up, and the retail environment."  Quigle says.

The windows for legal fireworks sales in Iowa are June 1 to July 8, and then again around New Years.
