Gas can exchange honors Iowa boy

A central Iowa boy's death four years ago, has inspired an annual push to exchange portable gas containers.   Ten year old Christopher Allsup of Winterset was burned over 90-percent of his body, when a plastic gas container exploded, showering him with burning gas, he died at the University of Iowa Burn Center five hours later.

The Legacy of Christopher Allsup Gas Can Exchange was set up in 2014, to educate the public on the potential dangers of portable gas containers and the highly flammable vapors that can escape, a single spark can trigger an explosion.

In honor of Christopher, you can turn in an old, potentially unsafe gas containers, and get a new one, that's made of metal and has the flame arrestor.

Supplies are limited, one exchange per household.   The event is Saturday, 8-10am, at the Metro Waste Authority's Hazardous Waste Drop-off facility in Bondurant.
