Iowa Governor reacts to child welfare review

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is commenting about a review that's getting underway of the Iowa Department of Human services, after the recent deaths of two teenage girls.

Reynolds stated during her weekly news conference, "No child should have to endure the abuse that those two children endured, it's unconscionable and we have an obligation to review this process and see if the adequate oversight is in place, and that's what we'll do, that's what the legislature is doing, that's what this office will continue to do."

Reynolds added, "There are a lot of great foster parents out there that are providing care for children, there's a lot of people who are doing it right, but this is unconscionable, no child should have to endure that, so we have an obligation to look at this system, and to do everything we can to make it better and more efficient and and make sure we have proper oversight in place."

Reynolds thanked retiring DHS Director Charles Palmer for his years of service, and says they'll soon be reviewing applicants to lead the agency.

She says they'll be looking for someone who will continue the mission of serving the most vulnerable citizens of the state, but someone who is not afraid to do things differently.
