Abnormally Dry drought monitor reaches Des Moines area

U.S. Drought Monitor for Iowa released June 15, 2017

The U.S. Drought Monitor shows dry conditions creeping into the Des Moines area, even with the rain this week.

"The rain that we had did definitely help."  National Weather Service Hydrologist Jeff Zogg tells WHO Radio News. "But, I did hear stories about places that got an inch of rainfall or more, and people went out and found the ground was still dry.  So, we definitely need more."

The Drought Monitor map cuts diagonally through Polk County and the Des Moines metro area, with the southeast part of the metro in Abnormally Dry drought status.

"The recent hot and dry conditions we've seen across the state have led to an increase in the area indicated as Abnormally Dry on the Drought Monitor.  Particularly in the south east and east central Iowa."  Zogg says.

There is a chance of rain and possible storms on Saturday, but Zogg says Father's Day still looks pretty amazing.

"If we get this severe weather out of the way on Saturday, it looks like Sunday will be a very nice day with seasonal temperatures and dry conditions."  He says.

"It looks like it's shaping up to be a real nice day."
