Des Moines Blank Park Zoo officials have cut the ribbon on a new Giraffe Pavillion.
It's 66-hundred square feet, and has very high ceilings.
It features an indoor area, where visitors can see and feed giraffe, even in the winter.
The $.2.2 million Blumenthal Giraffe Pavilion has the capacity for up to eight giraffe, and other hoof stock species.
“Not only does this facility allow for more public access to the giraffe, it allows for a huge upgrade in the quality of our animal care,” said Mark Vukovich, CEO. “It features a day room for the giraffe to exercise and a giraffe restraint device to allow for veterinary care without the need for risky immobilization.”
The giraffe are already using the new facility, which opens to the public this fall.
