New details are being released about a crash that killed five young people in Mason City this spring.
"The two main factors in the crash were speed and alcohol." Mason City Police Chief Jeff Brinkley tells WHO Radio News.
"The minimum speed that the Jeep Liberty was traveling was 79 miles an hour." He says.
That's 79 in a 30 zone. Brinkley says the driver of the Jeep, 20-year-old Zachary Wolf Hartley had a blood alcohol level above .08 when the Jeep smashed into a tree.
"I think that the photos accurately capture the seriousness of the crash and what happened; the intrusion into the passenger compartment of the vehicle from hitting the tree is pretty devastating." Brinkley says.
He says Hartley and four passengers ages 14 to 19 likely died on impact, before the Jeep burst into flames.
