A new public awareness campaign called Check To Protect is encouraging drivers to check for and address any open recalls on their vehicles.
Deborah Hersman with the National Safety Council says there are currently more than 53 million vehicles on the road that have an open recall.
She says vehicle manufacturers don't issue these recalls lightly, and it's worth the time to get any safety issues fixed.
Hersman adds that it doesn't cost anything to get any recall fixed. Drivers can go here and enter their VIN number to find out if there are any open recalls on their vehicles.
