Heat wave bakes Des Moines region this week

A heat wave is setting in the Des Moines region for the week ahead...  with temperatures in the 90s.

"We're not going to be pushing records or anything, but heat and humidity will definitely build through the week, and it will be oppressive with the humidity."  National Weather Service Meteorologist Brad Small tells WHO Radio News.

"From Des Moines, farther south and west into Missouri and Nebraska will be the worst areas."  He says. "This will be an extended area of heat and humidity that won't go away soon."

For anyone who works or plays outdoors, he says to be aware of symptoms of becoming overheated.

"If you feel fatigued or nauseous, if you stop sweating, those are signs you need to take a break from the activity."  Small  recommends drinking plenty of water, and taking breaks in the shade or in air conditioning to cool down.

He also reminds parents to keep an eye on children playing to be sure they're not overheating, and double check your back seat before walking away from the car if you have a small child or baby.
