Fire damaged a West Des Moines home this (Tuesday) morning. A neighbor, walking by the home at 710 12th Street spotted smoke coming from the back of the house around 10 o'clock.
The neighbor knocked on the front door, but got no answer so he flagged down a driver, who called 911.
West Des Moines Fire Marshall Mike Whitsell says firefighters were able to put out the fire in about 10-minutes.
He says there were several pets in the home. One large dog greeted firefighters right away, eager to get outside. He says firefighters attempted to give the dog oxygen, but it appeared to be okay. Firefighters also rescued two small dogs from the home. Whitsell says the dogs had found a pocket of air, under a coffee table in the home, and were okay.
There were also two large pet birds. One was in a cage, the other was loose, and put up a fight as firefighter caught it.
Whitsell says it's believed there were two other smaller dogs indoors.
No word on what caused the fire, or the extent of damages.
