The deaths of two teenage girls who were allegedly neglected by adoptive parents who claimed that the girls were being home-schooled have ignited a controversial discussion across Iowa: did the legislator go too far in deregulating homeschooling?
A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll indicates that 91 percent of Iowans think home-schooled children should be tested every year in reading and math to make sure they are at grade level. 79 percent of Iowans support requiring home-schooling families to review their lesson plans with home-schooling coordinators from local districts. 67 percent of Iowans favor requiring parents to take home-schooled children to their local districts for a quarterly welfare check.
That's plenty of support for government involvement in an activity that in which many parents engage to MINIMIZE government involvement.
Listener response included claims that the polling figure is bogus; 91 percent is a shockingly high number for ANY topic. Listen below.
