An inmate at the Anamosa State Penitentiary has pleaded guilty to trying to smuggle marijuana into prison.
Officials say March 11, 2017 Tanner Meade's wife Angela brought a balloon full of marijuana to Meade, which was later found in his possession.
Meade first pleaded not guilty, but changed the plea to guilty of class D felony offense of Furnishing a Controlled Substance to Inmates at a Detention Facility, and was found guilty July 3rd.
A Jones County judge has tacked-on more prison time for Meade, not to exceed five years.
The term will be served concurrently with Meade's original sentence. His wife got a deferred judgement for drug possession, and has been put on probation for one year.
The Department of Corrections issued an additional statement on the matter:
The Department of Corrections believes this sentence holds Meade and his visitor accountable for their actions while serving as a deterrent to others who might consider attempts to smuggle contraband into its facilities.
