Dry areas in Iowa spreading

This weeks' drought monitor shows a larger part of Iowa, impacted by dry conditions.  The most dry areas stretch from the northwest to the southeast, including central Iowa.

There are three counties in south central Iowa, that have slipped into the severe drought category.

The report shows most of the state either in abnormally dry or in moderate drought.

This week's report does not include that has fallen since Tuesday.

State Climatologist Harry Hillaker tells WHO Radio News there are certainly drought concerns in south central, and parts of southeast Iowa.

Hillaker says much of the area got a decent amount of rain Wednesday, but it was or as widespread or heavy as hoped.

He says some parts of south central Iowa only picked up some sprinkles, with a few exceptions, and many parts of Iowa are showing a deficit of several inches of rain.

He says Ottumwa, one of the areas that missed rain Wednesday, has only had 1.6 inches of rain since the first of June, their lowest June-July total since 1911.  Hillaker says that's about nine inches below normal.

It's been a case of "haves" and "have-nots."  Some parts of northeast Iowa have had excessive amounts of rain fall, other areas of the state are very short of rain, so the overall statewide average is showing a rainfall deficit of about one inch.

Hillaker says the weather next week will likely be cooler, with little chance of rain.
